Danny Philip is the Prime Minister elect

The Governer General has declared Hon. Danny Phillip as the Prime Minister elect of the Solomon Islands.  Hon. Phillip, a veteren politician and one time Deputy Prime Minister will now have the audacious task of putting together a cabinet from a faction of parliamentarians which features mostly new comers to Solomon Islands politics.

Prominent figures in this group include former Director of the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education, Hon. Dick Ha'amori, Hon. Moffat Fugui and Hon. Gordon Darcy Lilo.  Prominent businessmen turned politicians, Hon. Bobo Dettke and Hon. Namson Tran are also members of this group including former Prime Minister, Hon Snyder Rini.

Despite a last minute defection by the leader of Our Party, Hon. Manasseh Sogavare, the Prime Minister elect remained confident that his 26 MP's would finally provide him the mandate to lead government.  Official results indicate that only 49 parliamentarians casted their votes which raises the question on who abstained during the voting session today. [Editors note: A total of 50 votes were cast and 1 was spoilt]

Lifhaus understands that the Prime Minister elect will now form his cabinet and make deliberate attempts to merge the different policies of his diverse group.

PM elect

Will be interesting to see how Philip will handle those individual people with business interest of his camp. I am sure Fugui will sit and watch as debris unfold before his eyes. It may not happen tomorrow, next week, next month but somewhere along the line if they continue to remain in power. We are in for a big shock!

I think President Obama tried

I think President Obama tried the bi-partisan approach but it did not really work so that is also the downside of party politics.  Sometimes we are so deeply entrenched in party politics that we do not try and work together.  So I think Danny Phillip can simply talk his block into accepting that in order to fix the Solomon Islands, he needs to extend an invitation to the other group and ask them to be partners in leading government.  I mean seriously from his 26, he will find it difficult to pick even 5 ministers who have the calibre and integrity to lead our nation.  Let me try from the top of my head.

  1. Dick Haamori
  2. Dougles Ete
  3. John Moffat Fugui
  4. Snyder Rini

Oops! I cannot even reach 5 but look at the other side, you can form a decent government with those folks but only maybe, maybe if we took the bi-partisan approach and everyone commits to it then we can salvage our country.  Otherwise, we wait to see more infighting and politicking without any governing or leadership!
