SIFF barava over happy tomas....seriously beating Vanuatu and New Caledonia in a meaningless tournament like the TVL championship speaks of a bright future for football....you have to be kidding me! So we come back winners and we boast. How sapos umi no win ba? Well we will not have any press coverage - just like the U15 and U12 futsal teams who left noticably...but oketa come back nao?
Future of football lies in Solomon Islands consistently performing at the highest level not some meaningless tournaments like the TVL. Sapos umi consistently win at U17, U20 and U23 Oceania tournaments then I believe our future is bright. The truth is we have not been to any of these qualifiers for more than 10 years now and we are sliding backwards.....One euphoric moment in Vanuatu will do little to appease my mind.
SIFF prove me wrong and get a team to qualify for the U17, U20 or the Olympics. Otherwise, you can take the TVL trophy and shove it somewhere else!
Finally, the Learn & Play concept is great - I wait to see if it can turn heads in the above tournaments....Otherwise, come 2011, I am cheering for Tahiti in soccer! Yes, you read that right! Tahiti - it is the only Oceania team to have qualified for a REAL FIFA tournament - SIFF, hello? Anybody home?
The SIFF Learn & Play select side consists of young boys 15 yrs and younger. They can be considered our U15 team. Also this team is different to most because it is a product of SIFF's football + academic initiative, a holistic approach to football, which includes both development of mind and physic. The players are selected from KGVI, Goldie College and Aligegeo high schools - participants of the Learn & Play program.
According to my understanding the TVL competition showcased the U15 Olympic side from Vanuatu that will represent Oceania in the upcoming International Youth Olympics. Our Boys beat the Vanuatu Olympic side, which tells so much about the high level of football development amongst our youth level.
I am of the opinion that we have a solid foundation in the U15 to U20 level. And this is a direct result of SIFF's focus on developing the youth level in our football. It is also a mature and visionary approach to look towards WC 2014 after we didnt make it for this yrs WC. And by the look of things, and by such results as brought in by our U15 Learn & Play side, SIFF has been doing the right thing - they concentrated on youth development, both the 11 code as well as Futsal. On the senior level, we have a handful of players plying their trade in major leagues in NZ and PNG. Our local leagues here is also strong.
Come 2011 onwards we will see a new young Solomon Islands squad, consisting of young players that have gone through organised football programs never seen before in SI. Our Futsal boys will also have matured and they definitely will add depth to the 11 aside game.
Yes we have not seen the success of our U17 or U20 or even the Solympics (U23) or the National senior squad for that matter in the International arena. However if you follow soccer development with a unbiased lens you will notice that SIFF has been busy development youth football over the past yrs and the Learn & Play team that went to Vanuatu recently, who beat the U15 Vanuatu side that will represent Oceania in the Youth Olympics is a comforting sign. It demonstrates that what SIFF is doing at the Junior or youth level hem waka!
I think it was a massive media campaign aimed at dispelling any doubts about where we are heading in terms of soccer development. I think I can sympathize with the likes of Neo who found the drummed up "pat on the back" rather irritating. A soccer enthusiast myself, I must admit that we have been in the doldrums far too long and I have written on the local media to say my piece. However, I maintain a cordial relationship with some SIFF brass and have some idea of what is happening - apparently it is not enough to satisfy those like Neo who "correctly" believe that we should now be somewhere further away from our neighbours in terms of development.
BigRedFish, I agree with you - the focus on developing the consummate player is admirable and should be supported. If we think a little further back, the likes of Robert Seni, Gideon Omokirio, John Mark Ofu, Moffat Konofilia and the rest of the team that went to the finals against Australia in the 90's were products of a school 'school of excellence' program. Current African stars playing in the EPL, La Liga and globally are also products of similar programs in their own countries. The Learn & Play program extends that same approach but has a very limited and narrow focus. Where the school of excellence was far reaching, the Learn & Play program is limited to those who can get an education and play at the same time. The school of excellence concept reached even the grassroots who could not go to school or who did not want to go to school...but wanted to play soccer - both systems have their strong and weak points....my concern is why we have not consistently evolved instead our development is like a yoyo - sometimes up and mostly down!....
give them time, it's great to see youngsters representing us in international arena so good! they've worked hard and it was rewarded, there'll be more success to follow.
