Lifhaus Administrator questions judgment by Star

Our Senior Lifhaus Administrator has questioned the wisdom behind Solomon Star's decision to print the contents of an email by Solomon Islands Ambassador to the United States of America in its frontpage today.

"I personally think it is irresponsible of Solomon Star to print the email in its entirety.  This is a correspondence between our Ambassador and the medical students in Cuba - while the story is newsworthy, the contents of this email correspondence is not." said Our Senior Lifhaus Administrator who believes official correspondences by dignitaries and heads of state not intended for public consumption should remain confidential.

"There is a huge difference between quoting from the email and printing its content.  This is the Information Age but ethics is also important so it is prudent that papers like the Solomon Star practise some dignity when it comes to dealing with correspondences like this.  Remember this email was not directed to the Solomon Star, it was written to the student president and hence it is very important that the contents of the email remain private and confidential."  He also questioned if Solomon Star had already sought permission from Ambassador Beck to have the contents of his email printed in the paper.

Our Senior Lifhaus Administrator then cited the example of the United States government who have strict policies regarding presidential communications.  "There is a good reason why official correspondences by the US President is kept confidential until after his term in office has lapsed  when these correspondences are then made public and people are able to read them."  He emphasized that respect to the office dictates that these correspondences are kept strictly confidential so as not to bring disrepute to the office of the President.  "I would like to believe that this is also the same thought that our journalists should have when reporting on matters involving high ranking government dignitaries."

"I think Solomon Star has done damage already or people may think it is a trivial issue but it is not.  Remember ethics are important and some professional judgment on the part of Solomon Star would have been great."
