Maelanga retains Deputy PM while Hou gets Finance

As more ministers were named and sworn in, the crucial position of deputy Prime Minister appears to be resolved with the incumbent returning into the same position.  Prime Minister Lilo confirmed and it was revealed by Lifhaus sources that Deputy Prime Minister Maelanga will continue in this position.  Our sources did confirm that there was a lot of debate about this position with factions of the government split between Hon. Maelanga and Hon. Abana.

The influential position of Finance minister has been given to former CBSI governor, Hon. Rick Hou who immediately went to work outlining his ministery's priority issues and outlining a brief look at his vision for the ministry.  "This is another positive development and we hope the minister will uphold the integrity of this house in this role."

Prime Minister Lilo has also retained current caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka, in his role.  Hon. Agovaka whose role in government was recently questioned when he showed up at the Opposition camp is another influential figure in government.  In his role, the minister has also championed a lot of issues in the international arena, most recently the opening of the Solomon Island Mission in Geneva and government's response to human rights at the Universial Periodic Review at the United Nations.

With the government making crucial appointments public, it becomes very apparant that it has gained a lot of momentum going into Friday's motion of no confidence debate on Prime Minister Lilo.

Our Lifhaus political analyst remarked, "...it seems rather strange that you can bring a 'motion of no confidence' on a new Prime Minister without the element of proof that there is 'no confidence' in his leadership.  He has not been Prime Minister for even one month yet to judge his performance and competence in the job.  I think it is more correct to say that this is not a motion of no confidence, it is a question on the integrity of the Prime Minister.  These are two very different things and there are avenues to pursue this, the motion of no confidence should not be the only way."

While government appears to be shoring up its defence of the motion, the Opposition is revealed to be lobbying to get much needed support for the motion.  Our analyst concluded, "with the latest developments, I would not be surprised if the motion fails or is withdrawn on the floor of parliament.  The Opposition appears to have again lost a lot of ground it worked so hard to gain."
