A New Classroom for Taba'a Primary School

The 17th of December 2009 marked a new era in the history of Taba’a Primary School-it was a day that they’ve come to harvest the fruit of their labor- a brand new classroom to house their school children.

When you talk about Taba’a village in East Kwara’ae, the facts range from a laid back kind of atmosphere to a hectic one where hard earned drops of sweat need to be shed before one gets to its location up in the remote  hills of  East Malaita. To be frank, it is inaccessible to road and getting stuffs from Auki means carrying them on shoulders from the  road which is several hours away from home.

The idea of building a new classroom was on the minds of the hardworking villagers some years back. But that dream was only allowed to thrive five years ago with the idea that everyone must contribute to manually see the project through.

It got off to a good start seeing everyone cooperatively teaming to gather timber and gravel over the rugged hills to lay the foundation.

The birth of what turned out to be a two storey classroom wasn’t that easy as testified by one village elder, “shouldering the piece of timbers over the stiff hills were breath taking.”

But things looked as if they’ve been solidified from Honiara with the support of the Honiara based Taba’a community through various fundraising activities that have seen the purchase of materials to help erect the building. Along with that it was reported that Justin Fuo’o of Tropic Glass & Aluminum Ltd and the MP for East Malaita have donated kindly to the cause.

It must have been that support that kept the tireless villagers on the wheels and got the village elder gratifying, “had it not for the tremendous effort of everybody we won’t be here today.”

The chairman of the Honiara-based fundraising committee Mr. Wilfred Mete was a happy man at the grand opening, “we want to prioritise and secure better education for our children who in the future might in turn help make roads and infrastructure accessible to the communities."

Lifhaus witnessed the fun-filled grand opening which attracted people as far as the sea side communities who’ve come to enjoy live band entertainments, dancing and feasting.

Taba’a Primary School serves the communities of Taba’a, Magura and other surrounding villages.

The newly finished classroom is a living testimony of communal partnership and co-operation.
