Potential Honiara candidates begin trek to elections

Potential candidates in all the Honiara constituencies have begun ground work to consolidate their candidacy in next year's national general elections.  Lifhaus sources reveal that some of the names being mooted are very prominent Honiara residents.  However, what chances they have to actually win may depend on their ability to "build on the negative publicity being launched against the government and offer a better alternative," said a regular Lifhaus political commentator.

Residents of West Honiara have indicated that Namson Tran looks like a potential candidate in West Honiara.  "Mr Tran has targeted young people with loads of money being spent on sponsorship for various sports and some West Honiara residents are already earmarking him as a potential candidate" said a West side resident.  Current MP, Hon.  Issac Inoke Tosika has been quietly working in the background but there is no doubt that such a high visibility being placed on Mr. Tran will make his work of being re-elected become very difficult.

East Honiara will have some very interesting candidates among them a leading unionist.  Other candidates being rumoured about are David Maesua a long serving Honiara City Councillor and former mayor.  When quizzed about the possibility of Jack Donga, the vibrant and sometimes eccentric, Fishing Village candidate standing again our sources reveal that "he is not considering it seriously at the moment as he felt largely let down by certain sectors of his supporters during the by-elections which saw Mr Silas Milikada win".  It has also been strongly suggested that Mr Milikada is moving on and will contest in the Marovo Constituency.  Former Honiara stalwarts Simeon Bouro and Charles Dausabea are still in the radar but are not considered strong candidates at present.

However, Lifhaus also revealed one of its political commentators saying, "The Charles Dausabea case is an interesting one.  He was not considered an early favorite in the previous election but he won because of his appeal to the outlaying settlements in Honiara especially Burnscreek and Sun Valley where Simeon Bouro was very strong."  So according to this commentator, it is still too early to count out the veteren politician.

Former parliamentarian Alfred Maetia is said to be backing a new candidate for East Honiara.  When speaking with Lifhaus, the potential candidate confirmed that he will be campaigning on the change platform "I have not personally sought to be in parliament but I confirm I have been approached and I believe I can make a difference if given an opportunity to lead."

Central Honiara is also looking to replace its current MP.  Word from our Central Honiara sources reveal that Martin Alufurai the current SIFF President is already making headway into preparations for the elections.  Other candidates are rumoured to be plotting to put up a strong fight against the current MP Hon. Nelson Ne'e.

The elections are still months away but Honiara and the rest of the country is focusing their sights on the highly lucrative and influential 50 positions that will be vacant soon.
