Not a finance guy so can anyone explain it better the nitwit at Solomon Times and SStar who wrote this article? I think this puts more money in the hands of low income earners but seriously the average middle income earners still pay a higher tax bracket. The businessmen get exemptions and the very highly paid benefits that put them at an advantage. So my concern is people like me in the middle income bracket are still paying a high tax. So my question to mr hou is what subsidies (if any) do I get under this new tax table? Another thing, as soon as there is talk of more money the waku increase the price of the same crap they bring into the country. They do not care about inflation, they do not care about all these figures! They control the retail/wholesale and even the buses and fish n chips shop for crying out loud!..talk to me about how government will stamp out the rot which is simply that there are no opportunities for indigenous Solomon Islanders! We are slaves in our own country, what the @&$:$3$3 is wrong?
@mekolo every single working class in SI will benefit on this changes. Those employees who receive $290/wk will no longer pay tax and thos who recrecive $580 / FN will no longer pay tax. & those who recv $15080 & less per yr will no longer pay tax. This is a welcome change mekolo u mas accpt it atleast we start somewhere then bae govt wok lo all narafala big concern ya. or what nao you thinkim.
bae u still save servim fitim bag rice nao ya, mek sure no beim beer lo hem moa.
This wan hem gud news but no anywan luk osem happy aboutim. for criticize big lo umi bt for praise hemi no enaf. cant say nao LOL .well done RICK HOU & DL
Rice no garem any import duty tax ya hem 0% . rice farming is the best way ROC rice farming umi nao lazy for plant after every technical help all cme givim.
The Government has removed all taxes and import duties on Rice. The rice importers only pay the cost of rice and transport cost. At current import price and transport, to land a kilogram of rice in Honiara (from main markets in China and vietnam) will cost SB$3.20 (with some mark up from the importer) the retail price should be slightly higher than SB$3.20. If the current retail price is very high then someone is making a good cut. That calls for Government to bring rice under price control.
As for ROC rice, they have spent around SB$300m on rice since 1988 and the total national rice production is only around 2,000 tons. Look at the level of investment into rice production in SI (very expensive to produce a kilogram of rice in SI). Even with these figures, SI govt still see it fit to invest SB$25m of tax payers money into rice production. See how much rice they will produce from the SB$25m investment. Govt argues that this is import substitution but you don't implement such a policy based on dreams, you need hard data to direct policy intentions and not living in dream world.
SI Govt need to support Taro, Cassva, Yam, Sweet Potato and Kakake production and processing cos there is no need to teach us farmers to grow them. Leave rice growing to Asians, they are good at it. Anyone in SI choose to eat rice, let him or her dig deep into his pocket to pay for it.
@farmer u barava kasem part mi likem ya nao ya man. tru tru nao.umi lukluk lo own crops osem taro kumara & others. Sapos nma rice lo Solomon Islands bae mi still ok nma bcos mi no big up for eatim rice so i like local foods. Gvt mas duim gud tins lo local crops nau.
@farmer you are absolutely right. If SIG focus on getting better high yielding varieties of root crops rather than spending millions on rice production we would be much better off.
Mr Farmer's input on increasing production of local root-crops through intensive Government investment etc. is a thought valid in every aspects. However, to be realistic, reversing that TASTE of Solomon Islands young generation for RICE is an uphill battle for any government. Although living in town, I'm a frequent traveler to my home island/village and often bemused at the rate of rice consumption in my village. The irony is that just a stone's throw from the village are hectares of potato and kasava gardens. And you guess what??? The produce of those gardens are first and foremost for sale at the urban market. The earnings of the sale will be spent on goods from the shop....and topping the shopping list will of course be RICE and more RICE!!
Piknini born kam ma ask for rice na....any village feast will be tasteless without rice...the most valued contribution during death or marriage is rice, NOT a bag of potatao or kasava....if rice no stap lo haos, there'll be too much complain from mommies as that equates to "famine" even if potato garden side village still bountiful yet.
This obsession with rice is becoming far worse in Solomon Islands than in neighboring Fiji and Vanuatu in which local root-crops still rule the kitchen or dining table of any typical village or rural family.
Changing the taste is a psychological strategy that needs to target at least 2 generations to make our future generations less dependent on this Asian crop....but the Waku businesses will be unhappy if and when that happens cos that's a source of empire building for their next generation!!
I think most of the so called local crops were introduced thought i've no information whence they were introduce. Rice certainly should follow suit. I think we are just too lazy or may be rice is not suitable for farming here. they could be labour intensive but given that they can be stored for longer period it's worth while to switch to new crop.
nogud you me wok wok long garden and no gat time for doim other activities.
@n you should appreciate the fact that MP like DL & RH tried their best to make changes and they have to start some-where. $15080 should be a welcome change from $7800. how you like wait for nara 10 year s for twenty..so appreciate $15080.

many people will certainly benefit if tax or govt subside rice imports into the country.
i meant the ordinary people in those in villages depends very much on rice and has become a stable food in the country.
