On International Day for Women, Solomon Star had on its front page - the story of a battered mother. I was so disgusted with the picture I did not want to read the paper. Ella Kahue with usual "defender of women's rights cape" swoops in to tackle the issue. Then the very next day, the husband comes out with an elaborate tale with so many twists and turns that you could write it as the next episode of Lost. I mean it was that confusing and without a central theme - the journalist at Solomon Star could have done himself/herself proud, if they would have prodded him and written a rebuttal that stayed true to the original story they printed ya man? I mean that is what the professional papers do. They take a story, they decide on an angle and they run with it until they reach the end. The very next day the sister in law pitches into the debate by branding the husband as a liar!...Again, Solomon Star deviates from the original angle of the story to hop onto the wife's side....this seesaw journalism is common and I am not surprised. But here is my question. So who is lying?
Next question - what have women like Ella Kahue done to improve the well being of women - why do we still have stories abound in our communities that women are abused?
Next question - so if women are marginalized, aren't the men marginalized too by aid donors and agencies that promote the welfare of women & children and perhaps ignore the plight of men? We promote Pink Ribbon and forget about prostrate cancer? We promote the rights of women and undermine the rights of men to be the head of a family? I mean look at it this way, if God intended that we should share responsibilites, he would have made every creature with two heads instead of one. But no, in all of God's creation, he only made 1 head. An anomaly of nature from time to time, give 2 headed things...
I guess what I am trying to say here is, we need to contextualize things. If one society strongly believes women's right must be recognized, that they must be equal then so be it. In other societies where some form of discrimination is important to maintain social balance, then so be it. I think when we try to conform too much with the rest of the world, we lose a sense of who we are and what we are. Women are culturally cherised, prized possessions and have their place. Men also have their place and the order of nature was correct. Now all we have is confusion.
or hao - u fala moa.
I like it neo. NCW any other need to conceptualise things if ever want to succeed. or else we'll be seen as proponant of inequality. IMHO that could be another way to keep the tap on.
Lies or no lies, the bottom line is , violence should never be an option. A man who hits a woman is a coward. 100% sure that he would never stand up or hit another male. Those men who hit their wives or girlfriends should never do so, no matter what the situation. It is against the Law, it is against Custom and it is against Religion. Just think about a male you know that beats his wife or girlfriend, have you ever seen him physically challenge a male? No because Males who bash their wives up are purely Cowards.
Lisa the world of men is usually reeked with violence. Hem nao life women likem time oketa ask for equal rights? Original intention blo me hem two things nomoa ya:
1. Me questionim Solomon Star....obviously very lousy reporting wea no fitim me wastim $5 blo me lo hem
2. What nao oketa women groups been doim for women if violence against women hem still exist?
Kind mere olsem Ella Kahue ya, me readim lo Solomon Star nomoa but me no lukim any good ting hem doim for mum blo me.....granny blo me. Oketa very traditional women, never been hit and never been subjected to domestic violence...domestic violence hem kind life blo oketa white man ya! lo time before, me fala no save garem oketa kind problem osem today. because social structure blo umi hem stret and hem waka. I guarantee you, sapos man hem hittim women lo time before hem some ting for shem lo hem ana hem garem name for oketa kind people ya too.
You can't expect a single person to solve all the domestic violence problems. To change a persons attitude begins within the person her/him self. Domestic violence problem needs everyone to work together and change attitudes. By simply expressing her views in the media, Ella is contributing to the elimination of domestic violence, not totally eradicating it. By being so negative about it is not even contributing at all, only making you men even cross and think its okay to hit women. Use brain please....have a nice day :)
