Honiara residents have expressed pleasant surprise that the New Year celebrations this year have been relatively quiet. "As a matter of fact, it was rather too quiet!" one Honiara resident exclaimed. Our Senior Lifhaus Administrator also commented, "I thought Vavaya would be a trouble spot but it was quieter than the rowdy weekends we have had during the year. It took me by total surprise."
Lifhaus took to the streets and apart from the occassional overturned bins, there was very little activity happening. "It seemed like people just made some noise and then went back to sleep." Lifhaus did spot some worrying signs of rocks and boulders being strewn across the streets but there were no people on the streets. "The nightclubs were closing when we took a quick turn into town. People were drunk but walked home in a very orderly manner."

Another returning Honiara resident offered an alternative view. "Malaita is packed with Auki so crowded it is frightening. That is why there is no trouble in town. The mobile phone network has taken a toll and villages are overcrowded with people." He believes the rowdy crowd have all gone back to Malaita giving Honiara residents a very quiet christmas and new year celebrations.
Though police presence was visible, it was hardly needed. Lifhaus, however, is taking this time to wish everyone a prosperous New Year 2010. "We hope things change for the better this year," said a Lifhaus Administrator.
